Older Persons

As an Elder Law firm, we serve the legal and health-related needs of Older Persons – and their Caregivers.

Elder Law is the only area of law defined by the population we serve rather than by the type of services rendered.

We develop and carry out holistic, elder-focused legal plans
for long-term health-care and financial security of older adults and their families.

According to the 2000 Census, in Mississippi there were 433,098 persons aged 55 to 74 and 155,775 persons aged 75 and older. The population over age 64 is expected to double by 2030, when 1 of every 5 Americans will be 65 years or older. The 85+ age group is the fastest growing segment of the population. These seniors have unique legal needs.

Disability and chronic health conditions are a major problem for many older adults. In the 2000 Census, 260,505 Mississippians age 55 and over reported disabilities and were not living in an institutional setting. Much of this reported disability is linked to chronic conditions such as heart disease, arthritis or Alzheimer’s.

Changes in family dynamics also have affected the aging population. Divorce among adults 65 and over rose from only 1.6 percent of men and 1.5 percent of women in 1960 to 7 percent of men and 8.6 percent of women in 2003. Research on younger divorce rates suggests that fewer children and more stepchildren may change the availability of family support in the future for older people.
